Course Description: LA II/Biology/Health Integrated (General & Honors)

LAII/Bio/Health is an integrated curriculum that enhances the biology laboratory experience and fuses the content with Language Arts.

1st Trimester: Students experience learning through a variety of methods and ways of delivery such as Socratic Seminar, cooperative learning, inquiry, PBL and flip.  The core units in biology include trophic levels, biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems, population and sustainability.  LA II will follow the biology curriculum and align reading, writing and communication standards in this unit and prepare students for the SBAC Competency Exam in the spring.  Math and shop will be utilized as additional support as we create our culminating project.

3rd Trimester: Students will study inheritance, protein synthesis and human physiology in Biology.  The supporting novel for this unit is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a creative non-fiction text that explores issues of ethics, race and scientific discovery.  Students will experience learning through a variety of methods and ways of delivery with a culminating analysis/synthesis essay.

***The honors section of this course is based on a teacher referral, SBAC scores and prior grade from 8th or 9th grade LA and Science.  Students learn the information in general, but at a deeper level of understanding.  The work load is heavier and novels and assigned reading is at a higher level.  Honors students must reflect our motto of “Cream of the Crop:” Consistent, Responsible, Ethical, Ambitious and Mature.
